The term Bantustan was first used in the late 1940's.
'Bantu' means 'people' and 'stan' means 'land of'.
Previously, Bantustan referred to a tribal reserve for black inhabitants of South Africa.
Today, Bantustan is usually used to describe a region that lacks power.
Ciskei is one of the Bantustans that received nominal indpendence in South Africa. Others inclue Transkei, Venda and Bophuthatswana.
